This book follows Wink, one of the orphans from the first book in this series. This is the fourth story in the Gaslight Chronicles and the second full length book. Mostly, the romance between Wink and Liam felt forced. Maybe it was because of the way Liam encouraged Wink's other suitor, which felt really, really odd. Despite all the things I liked with this book I had one big problem: I didn't care what happened to the characters, particularly Wink and Liam. The stakes gradually rose they delved deeper into the murky waters of grumbling nobles. The plot was well written and intriguing. This takes place in background as Liam and Wink struggled to solve the two mysteries. From the tension between merchants and nobles, and how the power were gradually shifting, to the rumbles among the working classes.

There were other things that I could believe were happening. From the bad air quality, and the clever technical adaptations they used. A lot of the things that she described felt believable. I honestly if I hadn't been reading it for review, I probably wouldn't have finished itI enjoyed revisiting the London that Cindy Spencer Pape has created. Unfortunately, this book was a huge disappointment for me. I really love reading about the Hadrian family and hope future novels in this series follow those children as they find their place in life and find their perfect match.I loved Steam and Sorcery, so when I saw this on Netgalley I requested it on the spot. Overall this book was good enough the keep me slogging through the mediocre novellas to get to the next full length third book. Mostly I just loved getting to read about the Hadrian family again. The characters are well done, I loved the mystery around the missing people and the mechanical men. This makes a great second book to the series. I do wish however that the novellas had been labeled as just that (novella additions to supplement the series) rather than separate books. This book does draw in a lot of characters both from book 1 and the interem novellas. All the books in this series have had excellent narration.

I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was very well narrated. I loved following Wink and her adventures and watching her and Liam work together. This is what I thought this series was going to be when I finished book 1. Wink's story, better than the previous novellas
